A BRIEF HISTORYThe
First Presbyterian Church of Manchester was organized August 29, 1869 by the
Rev. Daniel Russell. There were fourteen charter members. The congregation
built a chapel in the fall of 1870; it was dedicated on January 8, 1871. The
first member received after the Church was organized was a Mr. William D.
Brown, who brought his letter of transfer from the Free Church of Scotland,
The present building was erected in 1880.
Started in August of that year, it was dedicated on December 26. All other
churches of Manchester gave up their services that day in order to join the
Presbyterians. There were 500 people present for the morning service and 400
for the evening. It was debt free as of that date.
An education wing was added onto the Sanctuary in
1960, providing additional classroom space. The Sanctuary was redecorated in
1995 with new carpet: and paint.
